Gov. DeSantis Declares Sarasota Swimmer Champ Over Transgender Athlete TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Sarasota-native and Olympic silver medalist Emma Weyant finished second to Lia Thomas in the 500-yard freestyle event the Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday. Not in the eyes of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, however. At a news conference Tuesday, Gov. DeSantis announced he would issue a proclamation making Weyant the winner of the NCAA 500-yard freestyle. CVST will be holding our first ever open water clinic on Saturday, April 23rd at Reddington Shores! The clinic will be 8:30-9:30am and include drills and games to introduce our athletes (our reintroduce) to Open Water Swimming. This event is Silver Group and up ONLY! We will need parent volunteers for this event, especially if you have a kayak or paddleboard to help keep an eye on the kids and prevent them from swimming across the Gulf of Mexico.
