You are unlikely ever to hear an Olympic awards ceremony quite like that, though that is precisely what has happened on a number of occasions: the world’s third-best athlete in an event stays home and watches the Games on TV, while a guy he has beaten routinely stands proudly on the awards stand, an Olympic medal draped ceremoniously around his neck by some IOC or FINA bigwig.
 
If you watched the Olympics last summer – and I know you did – you probably noticed some strange inconsistencies among the sports when it came to entrants and medals: Not all sports were equal.
