CVST Represents Well at State Open Water Championships
An air horn sounds and suddenly you’re surrounded by flailing limbs, desperately clawing to the buoy marking the first turn of the Florida Swimming Open Water Championships 5K at the Open Water Festival in Fort Myers. The start of the race feels more like a boxing match than a distance swim, as described by Daryl Pickerell (16), Abby Forman (13) and Maria Zambito (20) who swam the race representing the Carrollwood Village Swim Team (CVST), on Sunday, April 26th.
For Daryl Pickerell, this was his second time completing the race around Miromar Lakes completing it in a quick 1:14:23.30. This was Abby Forman’s first time swimming the 5k finishing in 1:22:53.10 (Forman also swan in the Crippen Mile on Saturday evening finishing with a time of 22:41.9). It was also Maria Zambito's second time in the event, finishing with a time of 1:21:59.10.
Also representing Carrollwood in the 800 freestyle was Jayden Repak (9). This was Repak’s first experience in open water racing placing 5th in his age group in a final time of 15:33.60.
From start to finish, these swimmers battled strong winds, waves, and other swimmers in a race that no training in a pool could ever prepare you for. The conditions constantly change and your race strategy must as well. Great job CVST!
